Designing for the Senses

Designing for the Senses

Do you ever go out, come home and think, "What a fabulous party!"? Chances are that the lighting and music were perfectly on point. I am a firm believer that music and lighting can make or break a party. The same holds true when it comes to creating that perfect ambiance for your home, it's important to use your senses to guide you.

Touch:

Textures are a perfect way to get a sense of comfort. Start in the bedroom. Surround yourself with with your favorite fabric and don't be afraid to mix up patterns and material. Seen above is a mix of soft and luxurious cotton combined with silk and velvet pillows.

Smell/Taste:

Remember as a kid coming home from school, smelling that familiar smell and thinking, “Mmm what’s for dinner"? Do you remember walking into grandma’s house and getting the first whiff of her fresh baked apple pie?  Place your favorite signature candles and potpourri throughout your home to establish that warm familiar smell.

Sight:

What's your favorite time of day? For some it's seeing the sunrise, for others it's sunset. Our moods change along with these instances of natural light. The windows pictured above allow for natural light to shine into the home at any hour and manipulate the internal mood, whatever time of day.

Sound:

Nothing is more soothing than the sound of your favorite song. Luckily for us, today's technology allows us to bring more than our favorite book and beverage with us as we wind down the day. Finally, we are able to implement a sound system in any room to assist in the creation of a desired ambiance.

Decorating doesn't have to be challenging. It's simply a matter of getting in tune with yourself and your senses.
